Oh sheesh. Here we go. I will preface this by saying that I was still double spacing after periods at the end of sentences until I was in medical school. Yes, I know that I am an old. (Well, actually a Xennial, but we are known for having analogue childhoods and digital adulthoods- and apparently liking Buffy the Vampire Slayer, so this all checks out).
It seems that Microsoft has decided on the matter, at least. One period after the end of the sentence is correct. And two periods will now be “flagged” as incorrect. Let the battle begin!
The Verge article, linked above, states that the debate stems from a leftover artifact of how typewriters allocated spaces for different letters, which made it necessary to use two spaces between sentences to differentiate them. But in the era of computers, this is no longer the case. What surprises me is how passionate the double spacers are. And they come from places you don’t expect. I learned this lesson the hard way when I brought it up in a group once. I wasn’t sure walking away from that conversation that feelings hadn’t been hurt.
So while I have converted to single spacing, I honestly understand both sides. But I am interested to hear what others have to say.
